Henry Ford made an impact in several areas. Starting with the perfection of the automobile, the assembly, and improvement to worker happiness.
First, the assembly line completely changed American industrialization. Eli Whitney’s interchangable parts were taken to the next level with the introduction of the assembly line, which allowed the continuous flow of goods from the factory at a faster and cheaper rate.
Second, the automobile was a world changing event. The automobile allowed people to live further from the Central cities, no longer did you have to live within walking or mass transit distance from work. A person could live many miles from work and travel in, thus this begins the start of suburbs.
Young people and women were also empowered by mass consumption of the automobile as it gave greater freedom to them to find jobs, to leave parents behind, and to simply just to leave.
The automobile also created an entire new industry beyond just the parts for the automobile. An owner would be needing gas, new tires, and repairs. Often taking families on road trips, more hotels and motels would be needed as well. An entire new industry that would seek to connect all of America would come about as well.
In the 1820s, Henry Clay of Kentucky and his American Plan dreamed of connecting the North,South, and West through a serious of “internal improvement” including roads and canals. Henry Ford though allow for that creation to happen less than a 100 years later, as Americans received Route 66, which would span from Chicago to Los Angeles. The automobile single handily changed the way people interacted with their neighbors and the people around them.
“The good Lord had only ten.”
Georges Clemenceau, French premier on President Woodrow Wilson’s 14 Points.
How does the above quote reflect France, England, and Italy’s reception of Wilson’s 14 point plan? Who do you think should have led the peace talks and why?
“I could use a hundred people who don’t know there s such a word as impossible”
